This carved fossil coral butterfly features an intricate natural pattern formed by ancient colonial corals preserved in stone over millions of years. Polished to a smooth finish, the surface reveals delicate flower-like coral structures in soft shades of gray, cream, and pale silver across both sides of the carving.
Fossil coral forms when prehistoric coral colonies are gradually replaced with minerals through the process of fossilization, preserving the original coral structure in remarkable detail. The starburst and honeycomb-like patterns visible throughout this piece are the preserved skeletal structures of ancient coral polyps that once lived in shallow marine environments.
Carved into a butterfly shape, this piece combines natural fossil texture with a sculptural silhouette. Each side displays slightly different coral patterns, giving the carving movement and variation depending on how it is viewed.
