These prehnite spheres are small worlds in themselves.
Prehnite is a calcium aluminum silicate mineral that forms in the cavities of volcanic rock, often growing slowly along fractures and voids where hot, mineral-rich fluids once moved through the stone. As those fluids cooled, crystals formed inward—layer by layer—sometimes leaving behind druzy pockets, crystalline “caves,” and natural inclusions sealed inside.
Many of these spheres feature open crevices and internal crystal growth, offering a glimpse into the stone’s original formation. The surface has been polished smooth, while the interior remains textured and raw—preserving the contrast between refinement and origin. Prehnite is an uncommon mineral, but well-formed, polished spheres with natural internal cavities are relatively rare.
These pieces come from Africa, where prehnite commonly occurs in basalt-hosted deposits associated with ancient volcanic activity. Each sphere represents a moment in deep geological time: pressure, heat, water, and patience working together over millions of years.
No two are alike. Some are pale and translucent. Most contain darker mineral inclusions, most commonly epidote, which formed alongside the prehnite during its growth and are a natural part of the stone’s structure. Some spheres feature natural druzy cavities—areas where small prehnite crystals formed inside the stone as it developed, creating a raw, crystalline interior. Druzy in prehnite often looks soft, sugary, or cavern-like, not spiky.
This listing is for one intuitively chosen sphere (around 40mm).
